Ephemeral
Ephemeral plants only surface for relatively short periods of time compared to most plants. Although they may have a short surface life they do have quite long dormant lives. This is because most of ephemeral plants spend most of their time dormant. They do this because they wait for the perfect conditions for them to grow and reproduce successfully. These conditions are the right combination of rain and sunlight. Ephemeral plants can stay dormant for up to a year while they wait on these perfect conditions.

There are three different types of ephemeral . These are :
-Spring ephemerals
-Desert ephemerals
-Mud Flat ephemerals
Spring ephemerals
Spring ephemerals are plants that quickly germinate and bloom in the spring. They do this to produce seeds once this goal is achieved. The plan then withers until the point that just the underground structure is left. The plant will then stay this for the rest of that year. They germinate in early spring because the canopy from the larger plants hasn't had the chance to form this gives these plants the chance to take advantage of this so that they can receive some of the sunlight.
Desert ephemerals
Desert ephemerals are plants that survive and reproduce in the harshness of the desert. They manage to do this by staying dormant in the form of their seed underground until the conditions are right for it to survive above ground. Once this happens the plant quickly germinates and grows to adulthood. It then reproduces and produces seeds.
Mud flat ephemerals
Mud flat ephemeral plants have very similar life cycles as desert ephmerals, but with one major difference instead of them waiting on water like the desert ephemerals, but instead they wait for the water level to fall. They do this by laying dormant in the mud until the water reaches the right level, once this happens they quickly go through their life cycle so that they can reproduce. They then spread their seeds all into the mud where they will repeat the process.
